Lzzy Halestorm has become a pinup seemingly overnight. Revolver magazine even declared her one of the "hottest chicks in metal." Though she's drop-dead gorgeous, objectifying female rock musicians is l-a-m-e. But it's particularly damaging when it overshadows the music; just ask the great Lita Ford, whose killer guitar skills have always taken a backseat to all the skimpy leather. Fans of hard rock would be making a similar mistake if they were to ignore Lzzy the powerful frontwoman, major-league howler and shredder. Founded by Lzzy and her drumming sibling Arejay in the late 1990s, Halestorm quickly made a name for themselves gigging around south central Pennsylvania. In 2005, the group signed with Atlantic Records on the strength of an independently released live EP titled One and Done. Though the group has shared stages with a who's who of post-grunge alternative-metal acts, including Shinedown, Trapt and Chevelle, they specialize in a tough-as-nails brand of pop metal that ultimately owes more to Motley Crue and even Heart than Staind and Creed. Halestorm released their self-titled major-label debut in 2009. The lead single was the provocatively named "I Get Off."

The show came towards the end of his 2010/11 world tour in support of his debut solo album “Slash.” Lead vocals on the tour were handled by Myles Kennedy of AlterBridge and the setlist featured tracks from his solo album, from his albums with both Slash’s Snakepit and Velvet Revolver, and classic songs that he co-wrote for Guns’n’Roses.

While the two live shows on this two-disc set share many of the same songs, the band treats their fans to a pair of very different performances. On the first disc, the band delivers a fairly straight-ahead performance, crushing the audience with the driving rock they’ve made a name for themselves with over the last decade. The real treat, however, comes on disc two. Recorded during the Kansas City stop of their “Anything and Everything” tour, the Florida post-grungers peel away the layers of amps, distortion, and rock & roll bombast, instead delivering an acoustic set that shows fans a more stripped-down version of the band. Though the arrangements don’t differ that drastically, the acoustic version really allows singer Brent Smith’s vocals to shine as they soar over top of the mix without having to fight with the rest of the band’s supercharged sound for supremacy. By pairing a traditional live set with something that’s more of a departure, Shinedown have created a compilation that gives fans a lot to sink their teeth into, making Somewhere in the Stratosphere an easy recommendation for anyone who loves the band and is looking to see them try to expand their sound in new directions.
