Best known as the lead singer of trip-hop duo Frou Frou, Imogen Heap's solo work is at least as interesting -- if not more -- as her collaborations. A bundle of young, exciting and vibrant talent, Heap composes solo music that reveals both shrewd craftsmanship and eloquent passion. As a pianist/keyboardist, her skill is immediately apparent and quite impressive: there are passages on her debut i Megaphone that are simply dazzling. Song arrangements display a keen awareness of what is now -- drumbeats and basslines are consistently danceable while electronic noises swoop and swirl with a refreshingly understated gracefulness. As a vocalist, Heap brings a slinky, sexy toughness that's never riddled with melodrama. Even when she's at her most vulnerable, one can't help but think she's a born survivor who can weather any emotional storm. Heap and her co-conspirators do justice to her distinctive, honest vocal delivery and lyrics and her superb musicianship.

The show recorded here was performed for family and friends at a Vancouver studio, so the sound is excellent and well-controlled. “Relief Next to Me” is nicely detailed. “The Ocean” could be a beatnik’s dream. “I Hear Noises” is exquisite folk, beautifully restrained. “Call It Off” is touching and gentle. “I Won’t Be Left” furiously strums with intention, with the bonus of drums accentuating the new wave pop drive. She's got that soulful thing down to a science, but there's nothing affected about it, and she never pushes too hard. Ten years of busking can do that for a girl (it's how she learned to use a loop pedal to duplicate the sound of a full band). Originally only available through her website, Acoustic Extravaganza doesn't include hit singles "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See," the theme from The Devil Wears Prada, but then it isn't a greatest hits collection. Recorded in two days, th set consists primarily of non-LP material, like the angry "Ashes," plus the featurette Five Go to Skye (Making the Album). The parental advisory warning ("explicit content") refers to the profanity in "Ashes." Otherwise, there's nothing objectionable going on here.

The first from July 1991 was filmed a few months before the release of her Little Earthquakes album and the second from July 1992 followed a few months after. There is a fascinating progression from one year to the next as she grows in confidence and skill as a live performer, buoyed by the critical and commercial success of the album. Naturally most of the songs are taken from Little Earthquakes but there are also rare songs from her various EPs released across the two years which didnt make it onto the album including her distinctive takes on Led Zeppelins Whole Lotta Love and Thank You and Nirvanas Smells Like Teen Spirit.
