  • Live 2003

    Coldplay

    Year: 2003

    Runtime: 1 hr 32 min

Riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head, Coldplay is in peak form on Coldplay Live 2003. This concert was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during an exhaustive year-long world tour, and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet, not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of either gender. Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker, and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2, and their own unique sonic landscape. "Politik" gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive highlights include "Daylight," "Yellow," the as-yet-unreleased new song "Moses," and the popular hits "In My Place," "Clocks," and "The Scientist." And while the concert visuals are slick and professional, this film--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality.

  • Hammersmith Odeon London '75

    Bruce Springsteen

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 2 hr 10 min

This is the stuff of legend. Born to Run had been released to unanimous acclaim. Bruce and band went to the U.K., where they were hyped as the band to see-and with the stakes so high, they didn’t back down. These are definitive performances. “Thunder Road” has never sounded more naked and vulnerable. “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” is clutch, a tight, affirmative performance that swings and punches with authority. “Spirit in the Night” slinks and unfolds like the New Jersey shoreline. The mix from Bob Clearmountain points up the band's incomparable chemistry, unlocking the magic and spotlighting the instruments while never sacrificing the wall of sound. By 1975, Springsteen had a complex web of songs with the most inventive structures imaginable. From the ethereal organ haunting the ghosts of “Lost in the Flood” or the simple piano accompaniment driving “For You” to the wistful memories of “Backstreets” and the urban sprawl of “Jungleland,” Bruce and The E Street Band were never more operatic or intense.

  • Pass The Jar

    Zac Brown Band

    Year: 2009

    Runtime: 1 hr 56 min

"Not only is this a stellar recording of a nearly flawless performance, but it's also peppered with star-studded cameos and a few cover songs of the household-favorite variety. More importantly, it reveals Zac Brown and his band in their most comfortable and confident element — the live setting. Nothing against Brown's recorded material, but after hearing this October 30, 2009 concert from Atlanta, there's really no argument that Brown and band prefer the stage to the studio. The fawning ""Whatever It Is"" opens the set with rootsy instruments twanging and grinding under Brown's good ol' boy drawl, but you can almost hear the high-fives in the crowd following an excellent cover of the Band's ""The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."" They do similar justice to a barn-burning rendition of ""The Devil Went Down To Georgia."" Kid Rock lends his graveled growl on a Zippo-hoisting version of Marshall Tucker Band's ""Can't You See"" and it's great to hear Shawn Mullins pipe in on the Jimmy Buffett-esque ""Toes,"" though it's Little Big Town's lush harmonic panorama on the heartwarming ""Colder Weather"" that shines brightest here."

There is something truly unique about the music that pours out of the four lads who comprise the experimental, indie outfit, Alt-J. It has a sparkling, melodious quality in the way the guitars fizzle in a bed of digital mist. But there are odd chanting harmonies, crunchy riffs that'll snap your teeth, and, most notably, a disjointed, percussive approach that's mightier than all. It's all helped to stew a bit of a phenomenon on the band's side of the Atlantic. Why just today the band snatched themselves a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize for their debut, An Awesome Wave (which is just about the best way to describe what lies within). Here in the US, the band is currently spreading the gospel one city at a time. Fronting a 19-piece band, including string and horn sections, and unveiling striking lighting and production elements created especially for this concert, Lennox demonstrates her distinctive vocal and performance talents on an array of songs from the classic American songbook, ranging from “Summertime”, “Georgia On My Mind”, “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child” to one of rock ’n’ roll’s most enduring classics, “I Put a Spell On You”. As she does on her Nostalgia album that spawned this one-of-a-kind concert, the singular approach Lennox brings to these classics enables them to resonate for a 21st century audience. The artist concludes her extraordinary show with a four song selection of her own hits performed solo at the piano, including “Here Comes the Rain Again”, “Why” and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”. Beautifully filmed by director Natalie Johns at the downtown Los Angeles art-deco landmark The Orpheum Theatre on January 28, 2015, 'An Evening Of Nostalgia With Annie Lennox' is a truly unique concert performance that music fans the world over can now experience for themselves.

Atlas Sound is the solo project of Bradford Cox, the striking and eccentric vocalist for experimental indie rocker act Deerhunter. Cox was born in 1982 in Athens, Georgia, a town whose burgeoning music scene greatly influenced the singer. He identified with the B-52's while growing up, particularly the late Ricky Wilson, and co-founded Deerhunter with drummer/keyboardist Moses Archuleta in 2001.Headlining Friday's edition of the FADER Sideshow, Cox whipped up a relaxing collage of terrestrial vocals and hypnotic Fender guitar, all flowing handsomely through miles of metal boxes and twisted wires. Though his output is organic at its source, Cox guides his music by higher powered, synthetic undercurrents, creating something that is both empowering and otherworldly.

The release of their self-titled LP in 2010 introduced the world to Beach Fossils' Dick Dale twanged, New Wave inspired surf rock: a frenetic sound, although then unique, has now become quite prevalent in the indie scene. But where this Brooklyn-based four-piece set themselves apart was through their Johnny Rotten-esque turbulent attitutes: a trait that's been upheld in their 2013 sophomore folow-up, Clash the Truth. Led by the melancholic growl of Dustin Payseur, Beach Fossils embody a liveliness and urgency that's shared by a majority of their generation. We witnessed this energy live in Austin at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel. We suggest sticking around til the final minutes to see the extent of Beach Fossils' volatility - where an explosive bout ends with a crippled drum kit.

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns.

Born in the mountains around his cabin home, the three songs here bring with them a certain rustic ease. I suppose that's just what happens when your writing sessions are bookended by long hikes and cool dips in the lake. But the most obvious quality is just how personal Brett gets here, belting out anthems about staying true to ones' self, reminding us of the danger of overthinking things, or just declaring an anonymous love for someone.
