  • Troubadours Rise of the Singer-Songwriter

    Various Artists

    Year: 2011

    Runtime: 1 hr 31 min

In the wake of the turbulent 1960s, a new style of song and songwriter came to the fore -- a style marked by vulnerable introspection and raw, naked emotion. Backed by little more than a lone acoustic guitar or simple piano, these exciting voices descended upon Los Angeles, the emerging epicenter of the American music scene, and the Troubadour, the famed West Hollywood club that nurtured this community of gifted young artists -- and blossoming critical, commercial sensations. Interweaving the intriguing story of the club that cemented their musical legacy, TROUBADOURS is a first-hand account of the genesis of the singer-songwriter movement, centering on the historic collaboration between Carole King and James Taylor, as well as on Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Joni Mitchell, Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt, the Eagles, Elton John, and many others.

  • Trovadores

    Various Artists

    Year: 2014

    Runtime: 1 hr 13 min

Troubadours is the story of four musical artists finding success, but nobody really knowing about it. Diego, Alvaro, Lorenzo and Julio all share the same town, an other-worldly and enigmatic city that protects them for days on end. Troubadours is a reflection on art and fame, unafraid of reaching into its insanity. It finds the adequate rhythm to portray the drives of different persons who have left everything behind them, and now keep forging ahead irrevocably. The magic to be found a gaze, the concealed beauty of an ordinary town or the sheer greatness of the insignificant are the overarching notions and ideas of this film.

    Various Artists

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 54 min

Dance Time: Victorian Era Couple Dances, Vol. 5 continues the tradition of The Romance of Mid-19th Century Couple Dances. The viewer re-visits the classic 19th century couple dances in order to explore 32 innovative step variations, which were developed in the last part of the 19th century. The Waltz flourished with turning embellishments; the Polka blossomed into playful variations; the Galop rose to a new level of expertise; and the Mazurka became the major showpiece of the era. As with all videos in the How to Dance Through Time series, the dances are introduced with a concise, historical overview and illustrated with authentic photographs and drawings. The steps were carefully researched from period manuscripts and are recreations of historical dances. Close up and slow motion views make learning the moves simple and fun. Dance historian and choreographer Carol Téten is an engaging presence in the series, providing historical context and calling out dance instructions as professional dancers demonstrate. Following each instructional section, dancers from the Dance Through Time company perform with authentic music and fashions of the era.

  • Band In Seattle: Episode 304

    Wild Powwers

    Year: 2016

Wild Powwers has more oomph than Ws in their name. Jordan Gomes is a beast on bass, Lupe Flores is the human embodiment of a kick drum, and Lara Hilgeman manages to channel riot girl and soul diva at the same time. It’s dark and heavy and dirty and magical. The three of them bring in all kinds of influences, but it all still manages to sound like the same band in every song, somehow. This trio – no, trifecta – has the prolific songwriting chops and hardworking road mentality that it takes to make it as a band. They’ve got a unique sound, great attitudes, and songs that get lodged in the deepest, darkest bits of your brain.
