    Ra Ra Riot. Such an appropriate name. The cheerleader-esque "Ra ra" chant evokes images of high school, all of which can be found in this youthful band. You've got your photogenic prom queens on violin and cello. Your shaggy-haired Drama Club Stud on vocals. Your lovable athletic jock on drums. Your wacky class clowns on guitar and bass. And there's the "Riot" part, which comes close to describing this six-piece's blend of controlled chaos. The songs combine distorted guitar, fat bass, keyboards, orchestrated strings, and vocals. Mix the Arcade Fire with Devo and some coverpage-worthy good looks, and you wouldn't be too far from Ra Ra Riot's enjoyable racket.

    Ra Ra Riot are on an alluring career trajectory. The band has gone from small-town favorites to big stage stars, and their recent swing through our city for four nights at both The Bowery Ballroom and The Music Hall of Williamsburg seemed the perfect time to capture their ascent.

    Starting off as contemporaries to bands like Vampire Weekend, Ra Ra Riot has been something of a slow burner, choosing to develop and nurture a sound rather than cashing in on one, quick aesthetic. Following the release of their polished, Chris Walla produced sophomore album The Orchard, the band now find themselves at a point of promise. The intricacies of their arrangements rival many of the so-called art-rockers, with heaps more accessibility. While The Orchard dropped hooks for heady, reverberated decorations, the ornate finish provides a complimentary side to a band still building its foundation.

    Surfer Blood

    This particular show was captured on a sticky summer night June of 2010 at the Daniel Street club in Milford Connecticut. Though filming in an unfamiliar setting yielded a somewhat tricky production, what follows is a honest, on-stage (and, towards the end...off) account of one of 2010's most exciting bands. Here Surfer Blood take to tangy, sun kissed fret work and stomp the pedal box moments of grit...the band's raw guitar crunch seeping into a heavy sway of multiple, percussive elements. At the helm of the group, John Paul (JP) Pitts flaunts flailing, haphazard kind of vocals, high on reverb and coloring outside the melodious lines like some newbie version of Stephen Malkmus. Not surprisingly, it's a sound that reminisces more of early 90s buzz bin bands than the contemporary indie fixation with weird electronic acrobatics; a refreshing, throwback spin that has felt very of the moment all year long.

    Little Green Cars

    We're not going out on a limb by saying Glassnote Records has an eye for selecting acts that quench our insatiable cravings for folk rock (just ask Marcus Mumford). A recent addition to their roster comes in the form of a group of five kids from Dublin who are collectively known as Little Green Cars. The band is fronted by the unsettled stare of Stevie Appleby and the stoic gaze of Faye O'Leary, who together guide each of the group's intimate harmonizations into their own boistrous sing-a-long ballads.

    With the release of their debut LP, Absolute Zero, coming in April, these young folks took a trip down to Austin, Texas to perform at Conflict of Interest's night at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel, where we were armed and ready with a production crew to capture one of our favorite new bands for you to enjoy.

    Since storming on to the scene in '06, TPC have honed in on the kind of proper, pop chops that have given them the inside track on this here music industry of ours. Theirs' are tunes that come packaged with a host of tasty touches hiding inside: acrobatic swirls of guitar, warm and woozy swells of synthesizer, and of course, Dave Monks' endearing, boy next door vocal delivery at the helm of the quartet.

    The jam indie rock trio White Denim hail from Austin, Texas, where bandmates Josh Block (drums), Steve Terebecki (bass), and James Petralli (guitars, vocals) first set up shop in 2005. All three members were veterans of the Austin scene; Block and Petralli had previously played together in the alt-rock band Parque Torche, while Terebecki was a member of Peach Train. Drawing from a number of punk and garage rock influences, the group fashioned a hard-hitting sound with crunchy guitar riffs and frantic energy.

    The Phenomenal Handclap Band brought their funkadelic sermonizing to Santos Party House for the record release party of their self-titled debut.
    Despite the shortness of their set, the collective brought together orchestral coordination, all the spirit and technical proficiency of their album and a ton of joyous presence to make everyone in the audience a believer.

    A punk-inflected indie rock group whose bawling, thrashing sound reflected a wide range of influences ranging from the Pixies to Bright Eyes to Bruce Springsteen, Glen Rock, NJ's Titus Andronicus formed in 2005 with Liam Betson, Ian Graetzer, Eric Harm, Patrick Stickles, and Dan Tews.

    Beach Fossils

    The release of their self-titled LP in 2010 introduced the world to Beach Fossils' Dick Dale twanged, New Wave inspired surf rock: a frenetic sound, although then unique, has now become quite prevalent in the indie scene. But where this Brooklyn-based four-piece set themselves apart was through their Johnny Rotten-esque turbulent attitutes: a trait that's been upheld in their 2013 sophomore folow-up, Clash the Truth. Led by the melancholic growl of Dustin Payseur, Beach Fossils embody a liveliness and urgency that's shared by a majority of their generation. We witnessed this energy live in Austin at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel. We suggest sticking around til the final minutes to see the extent of Beach Fossils' volatility - where an explosive bout ends with a crippled drum kit.

    Blitzen Trapper

    Blitzen Trapper's music went through various genres with each record, bouncing from indie folk to art rock to experimental folk before settling into a rich, dusty brand of Neil Young-inspired alt country. The band formed in 2000 in Portland, Oregon, with songwriter Eric Earley leading a lineup that also included Erik Menteer (guitar, keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (drums, vocals), Michael Van Pelt (bass), Drew Laughery (keyboard), and Marty Marquis (keyboard, vocals). Before signing a record contract in 2007, the band released three albums on its own dime: an eponymous effort in 2003, Field Rexx in 2005, and the highly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation in 2007. The latter album landed the group a record deal with Sub Pop.

    We weren't shy in our no-holds-barred description of Brooklyn-hailing Caveman's self-titled sophomore LP as a musical opiate that we've boastfully abused. They possess an intoxicating musical progression of sounds that we've become accustomed to in many of our favorite indie-folky-harmonied-rock groups with a simple richness that elicits a sense of sonic meditation equivalent to peers like Grizzly Bear and Local Natives.

    Our New York neighbors joined us down at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel and gave Austin a heavy dosage of their sonic sedative, and we're pleased to bring you the performance in full.

    Kodaline

    Year: 2013

    The music created by Dublin alternative four-piece Kodaline will hijack a diverse assortment of souls. Their debut EP, released last year, featured four songs, all of which offered their own marque of sincerity stretching from the indie rock simplicity of "Perfect World" to the highest reaches of the arena-suited "All I Want", where frontman Steve Garrigan squeezes hearts with a voice comparable only to that of Coldplay's Chris Martin. Kodaline is a perfect emblem of a band that will undoubtedly explode in the U.S. as their genre melding music is accessible to fans of any palate.

    Baeble captured the Irishmen during their recent trip to the States when they made a profound pit stop at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel down in Austin this March. Their debut full-length studio album, In A Perfect World is due out next month, June 10th, and we're confident this concert capture will be the perfect icebreaker with your new favorite band: Kodaline.

    Recently, the band released The Century of Self on their own independent Richter Scale imprint. Rich, sophisticated, complex, yet ultimately articulate; Century of Self is deep in scope, straining themes of mythology, mysticism, and nature through its' collection of anthemic, hard rock.

    Hence the dramatic undertaking in bringing these epic songs to life in the live setting. And thank god for it... The band's unwavering commitment to doing The Century of Self justice translated into a kinetic kind of performance; one that sent an undeniable synergy buzzing 'bout the building the moment the band walked on stage. With fists in the air, sporadic mosh pit eruptions, and even a bit of crowd surfing (by audience and band members alike).

    Deerhunter

    Oftentimes at live shows, musicians of the indie-rock variety get so caught up in all the strut and swagger that goes along with rock music that they forget to be fun. Deerhunter are not that, as evidenced by their performance here at McCarren Park Pool. On the contrary, front man Bradford Cox is a pretty damn funny guy. And while he may look like a young Thurston Moore without the flowing hair, Deerhunter opt out of your typical art-rock arrogance and instead go for a sonically sound show complete with a driving rhythm section and extra catchy guitar riffs. There's even a nutty vocal spot from Cole Alexander of The Black Lips. Top it off with some psychedelic effects and a pretty rhythm guitarist in cheerleader garb, and you've got yourself a Deerhunter performance that's way too fun to miss out on.

    Mac DeMarco

    Behind Mac DeMarco's torn up jeans, oversized flannel and rambunctious attitude is a magnificent and emotive songwriter. The Canadian artist's debut full-length album, simply called '2', is loaded with jangly guitar rock, which he personally describes as "jizz jazz", as well as simple and relatable lyrics about suburban life.

    During this showcase at the Hype Hotel, the rowdy Canadian was in full swing with random outbursts while chugging beers supplied by audience members. Did we mention his set was at 1PM? But this boisterous behavior was juxtaposed as the gentler Dr. Jekyll side of DeMarco's split personality radiated brilliantly through his music.

Like a well informed ode to the great guitar driven bands of yesteryear (think My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Smiths, etc), The Pains of Being Pure at Heart tip their cap to those who inspired them with a performance that validates their current status as a band to know and watch over the coming months.

    ZZ Ward

    To listen to ZZ Ward is to hear two distinct worlds colliding in explosive fashion. See, the native Oregonian's first love is The Blues. As a teenager, she initially found her voice performing in her father's blues band. College though would introduce ZZ to hip hop, her voice peppering the hooks and choruses of local musicians in Eugene OR. Eventually, she would find ways to embrace both sides of her musical identity; a profound feat on display all over her recent debut album, Til the Casket Drops. Recently, ZZ brought a few of that album's choice tracks by Baeble, soothing over the nitty gritty rockers in us in the process. With sideman Erick Walls by her side and a classic fedora cropped neatly on top, the 24 year old musician performed stripped down versions of "Put the Gun Down", "Charlie Ain't Home", and "365 Days". With her timeless, smoky voice, dusty blues-infused rhythms, and some serious, hip hop swagger, we think you'll find ZZ Ward to be a unique force to be reckoned with.

    Southern Californian rock outfit Thrice have a decade long reputation for unleashing enthralling bouts of electric aggression and emotion, furiously flung from the heart without much care of consequence. The band's eighth release Major/Minor is as exciting as ever; crunchy yet melodic, with Dustin Kensrue's raspy siren overlaying an unexpected, grungy foundation. Turns out these guys are full of surprises, as we recently learned on a golden, Fall afternoon at a pristine photography studio on the west side of Manhattan. With late afternoon light painting rusty tones of orange and yellow on Dustin and guitarist Teppei Teranishi, the brothers Thrice traded electricity for more acoustic means, cutting three of Major/Minor's songs down to the mighty emotional footwork the band rely upon to truly take their music places. The result is a set that's stunning in its beauty and simplicity, yet every bit as enticing as what you have come to rely on Thrice to deliver over the years.

    Atlas Sound

    Atlas Sound is the solo project of Bradford Cox, the striking and eccentric vocalist for experimental indie rocker act Deerhunter. Cox was born in 1982 in Athens, Georgia, a town whose burgeoning music scene greatly influenced the singer. He identified with the B-52's while growing up, particularly the late Ricky Wilson, and co-founded Deerhunter with drummer/keyboardist Moses Archuleta in 2001.Headlining Friday's edition of the FADER Sideshow, Cox whipped up a relaxing collage of terrestrial vocals and hypnotic Fender guitar, all flowing handsomely through miles of metal boxes and twisted wires. Though his output is organic at its source, Cox guides his music by higher powered, synthetic undercurrents, creating something that is both empowering and otherworldly.

    Earlier this year, when Ra Ra Riot unleashed their third full-length record, Beta Love, we must admit that we were somewhat apprehensive about their sudden synth pop indulgence. To make such a polarized transition away from their intimate orchestral tunes was surely a shock that many longtime fans were forced to gradually grasp. But we, as have Ra Ra Riot's faithful, have come to appreciate this new, effervescent feel, and all it required was a live Beta Love experience.

    We caught Ra Ra Riot's brilliant spectacle down in Austin, Texas during Conflict of Interest's night at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel, and Beta Love skeptics beware, as our video of their entire performance can (and will) make a fan out of the most cynical synth adversary.

    The Go! Team are a six-piece band from Brighton, England. They combine indie rock and garage rock with a mixture of blaxploitation and Bollywood soundtracks, double dutch chants, old school hip hop and distorted guitars. Their songs are a mix of live instrumentation and samples from various sources. The band's vocals vary between performances: while live vocals are handled mostly by Ninja (with Tsuchida and Fukami-Taylor also singing some solos), vocals on record also feature sampled and guest voices.

    Two Door Cinema Club

    Two Door Cinema club exhibit the same knack for chance that propelled them to the stage in the very beginning, experimenting ever so slightly by trimming the intense rhythms, dashing tempos, and inventive flourishes of "Undercover Martyn", "Cigarettes In The Theatre", and "Something Good Can Work" down into acoustic roots. The result is a set of songs that places emphasis on the melodies, harmonies, and story lines that drive at the heart of what this trio does. Call it another chance that, to no one's surprise, pays off in the form of this candid Guest Apartment style session with Two Door Cinema Club.

    Youth Lagoon

    Trevor Powers, better known as Youth Lagoon, is in a class all his own when it comes to psychedelia. His lyrics delve unrelentingly into the human psyche while his music swirls with twinkling piano and a tornado of fuzzy guitars. Yet through all that intensity, he still manages to make us feel calm and collected, like we're being rocked to sleep in the midst of a storm.


    We've been obsessed with his sophomore album, Wondrous Bughouse, ever since it came out in March. Lucky for us, Youth Lagoon performed a soaring set during SXSW, at Stereogum's party for Hype Machine's Hype Hotel. After admiring the unique recording production for so long, it's honestly fascinating to see Powers and his band weave their bizarre carnival sound live onstage in challenging songs like "Mute" and "Attic Doctor." Watch the video and get swept away.
