  • Live From The House Of Soul

Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band

    Year: 2016

    Runtime: 29 min

The first installment of Daptone Records' new video series, Live From The House Of Soul. Directed by Poull Brien and shot in the backyard of Daptone's House of Soul in Bushwick, Brooklyn, features Charles Bradley at his best with the Menahan Street Band. Charles Bradley's voice has evolved from a lifetime of paying dues, having nomadically labored for decades at various day jobs from Maine to Alaska - singing and performing in his spare time - before re-settling in his hometown Brooklyn and eventually finding a musical home at Dunham. In his distinctively rough-hewn timbre one hears the unmistakable voice of experience - each note and gruff inflection a reflection of his extended, sometimes rocky, personal path. It's only fitting that producer, Brenneck (also a member of The Dap-Kings and The Budos Band), would recognize in Bradley a kindred musical spirit - a singer whose performances exude both raw power and poignant beauty.

  • Bowlive: Live at the Brooklyn Bowl

    Soulive

    Year: 2010

    Runtime: 2 hr 12 min

In March of 2010, the members of Soulive hauled their instruments through the doors of a newly-opened warehouse-turned-music venue in Brooklyn that they would call home for the next two weeks. Eric Krasno, Alan Evans and Neal Evans called on a multitude of their closest friends and musical conspirators to join them over the next fortnight - creating an incredibly broad guest lineup that included some of the pre-eminent guitar virtuosos of our generation (Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes), some of the biggest names in hip-hop (Questlove, Rahzel), and some of the most inventive improvisational players in modern rock n' roll (Robert Randolph, Marco Benevento, Oteil & Kofi Burbridge). The Brooklyn Bowl quickly became the mecca for these very distinct yet like-minded musicians, where they returned night after night, donning the dress code for good times (bowling shoes) and sharing famous Blue Ribbon fried chicken. The common thread that tied together all these disparate ingredients quickly became palpable -- from the transcendental heartfelt improvisations onstage to the homey & playful atmosphere provided by the bowling alley, the Soulive residency was like nothing that had come before it because all of those diverse elements fused to ultimately bring the Soul to Brooklyn Bowl.

  • Live at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel

    Ra Ra Riot

    Year: 2013

    Runtime: 29 min

Earlier this year, when Ra Ra Riot unleashed their third full-length record, Beta Love, we must admit that we were somewhat apprehensive about their sudden synth pop indulgence. To make such a polarized transition away from their intimate orchestral tunes was surely a shock that many longtime fans were forced to gradually grasp. But we, as have Ra Ra Riot's faithful, have come to appreciate this new, effervescent feel, and all it required was a live Beta Love experience.

We caught Ra Ra Riot's brilliant spectacle down in Austin, Texas during Conflict of Interest's night at Hype Machine's Hype Hotel, and Beta Love skeptics beware, as our video of their entire performance can (and will) make a fan out of the most cynical synth adversary.

  • Summer Night Concert 2018

    Valery Gergiev & Wiener Philharmoniker

    Year: 2018

    Runtime: 1 hr 15 min

For many music lovers, summer means the Vienna Philharmonic’s annual concert at the city’s Schönbrunn Palace—a spectacular live performance of classical favorites in front of more than 100,000 people. Russian Valery Gergiev was 2018’s guest conductor, bringing a taste of Italy to the Austrian capital. Music by the great Italian composers, including arias from Verdi’s Aida, Puccini’s Tosca, and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, complement composers inspired by Italy itself—Prokofiev (Romeo & Juliet) and Julius Fučik (Florentiner Marsch) among them. The orchestra is joined by soprano Anna Netrebko for this thrilling, heartwarming, balmy evening of great music-making.
